Circular TFT Display Technology

Round TFT LCD modules from 1.28" to 7.0" with resolutions from 240x240 to 1080x1080, all using IPS wide viewing angle technology. Find out how circular displays work, how to choose an interface and where they make the difference in product design.

Winstar Circular IPS TFT Display Modules

Overview

A circular TFT display is a full colour active matrix LCD built with a round active area instead of the usual rectangle. The display glass, black mask and backlight are all shaped to the circle, so the module drops straight into round housings, bezels and rotary controls where a rectangular screen would waste space or simply not fit.

As the authorised distributor for Winstar Display Corporation we offer round TFT LCD modules from 1.28" to 4.0" with resolutions from 240x240 to 800x800, plus 5.0" and 7.0" 1080x1080 models from Disea. Every model uses an IPS panel for wide viewing angles and rich colour, with SPI, RGB, MCU or MIPI DSI interfaces and optional projected capacitive touch (PCAP) with optical bonding.

How a Circular TFT Works

Electrically, a round TFT works just like a square one. The driver IC holds a square frame buffer, for example 240x240 or 480x480 pixels, and your graphics are drawn into it as normal. The panel's black mask and shaped glass only reveal the pixels inside the circle, so anything drawn in the corners is simply not visible.

The row and column wiring that would normally run along straight edges is routed around the circumference, and the driver IC and flex connection (FPC) sit on a small tab outside the active area. This keeps the border slim, so a 1.28" display with a 32.4mm active area fits within an outline of around 36mm.

Advantages of Circular TFT Displays

Why designers choose a round display for products where a rectangle would look out of place

Design Freedom

A round display fits naturally into dials, knobs, watch cases and round enclosures, giving products a distinctive, premium appearance.

IPS Viewing from Any Angle

Every model uses an IPS panel with 80~85° viewing angles, so gauges and controls read clearly however the product is mounted or turned.

High Resolution

From 240x240 on a 1.28" display up to 1080x1080 on 5.0" and 7.0" models, for sharp text, smooth gauges and rich graphics with up to 16.7M colours.

Space Efficient

No unused corners and a slim border around the active area, making the most of the space available in compact and wearable devices.

Touch & Gesture Ready

Optional PCAP touch with optical bonding for single-touch, multi-touch and gesture control, with improved contrast and durability.

Easy Integration

Low pin count SPI for small microcontrollers, through to RGB and MIPI DSI for application processors driving larger, higher resolution displays.

Choosing an Interface

The right interface depends on display size, resolution and the processor in your design. Smaller round displays use SPI, which needs only a few pins and is well supported by popular microcontrollers. Mid-size 480x480 displays combine SPI for set-up with a parallel RGB bus for fast video data, while the larger high resolution models use MIPI DSI.

Our engineers can help match a display and interface to your host system and arrange samples.

Frequently Asked Questions

Design your graphics on a square canvas matching the display resolution, for example 240x240 or 480x480, and keep important content inside the inscribed circle. Pixels in the corners are written to the driver as normal but are hidden by the circular mask.

For small displays driven by a microcontroller, SPI is the simplest option. For 480x480 displays with animation, SPI+RGB gives faster updates. For high resolution displays connected to an application processor, MIPI DSI is recommended. Our engineers can advise on the best match for your host system.
