Introduction to Plastic Optical Fibre

Plastic Optical Fibre (POF) uses a PMMA core to guide visible light over short distances — typically up to 50 m. Unlike glass fibre, POF can be cut and terminated with simple tools, making it ideal for industrial automation and home networking.

Advantages of POF

  • No specialist cleaving tools required
  • Large core diameter simplifies alignment
  • Immune to electromagnetic interference
  • Lightweight and flexible

Typical Applications

Industrial fieldbus (PROFIBUS, CAN), automotive MOST networks, home audio/video (TOSLINK) and decorative lighting are all common POF application areas.
